the fact that kristen had been prescribed prednisone for a recent cold sore outbreak (prior to the compartment syndrome event that landed her in the hospital) may have contributed to the unusually devastating bacterial growth in her system. (prednisone and similar steroids suppress immune response which is why they prevent swelling.) it may also be that the breakdown of the mucous membrane resulting from the recent sores allowed the common strepA bacteria into the bloodstream.
this is all conjecture and we may never know the pathway of infection or the explanation for all this with any certainty. meanwhile, she is miserably uncomfortable but healing well.
Keep up the good fight, guys. And get home soon!
ReplyDeleteDear Kristen and Ben, Thanks for the info. Ben, It helps to understand some of the possibilities. I'm still sending lots of energy and prayers for continued recovery, and for some comfort and ease from the pain of it all. Family & friends are still thinking about you, calling and saying they continue to send prayers and energy. Hang in there, love you both. Mom, Caryl
ReplyDeleteDear Kristen,
ReplyDelete"May the sun
bring you new energy by day
May the moon
softly restore you by night
May the rain
wash away your worries
May the breeze
blow new strength into your being
May you walk
gently through the world and know
its beauty all the days of your life.

Dear Kristen and Ben,
ReplyDeleteYour courage and strength is impressive and moving. The entry about the girls' visit brought tears to my eyes, you have a beautiful family and I'm so glad we've met you. We saw Anna and Emil recently and we're all looking forward to a great big playdate (and a celebration for your recovery).
big hugs and hopes for more good news,

Dear Ben and Kristen,
ReplyDeleteKeep up the healing. The birds are singing out my window, a dog is running around out there, and the weather is beautiful after a long, rainy cold spell. It's a good day today. Wishing you a good day, too.
